Northwestern Polytechnical University has made a new breakthrough in the imitation of "firefly" communication drone

The dots of light in the tail of fireflies are their way of encrypted communication, and they convey signals such as identifying the same kind, warning of danger, and guiding the direction through unique luminous patterns and frequencies. If the drone can also imitate the firefly and use light signals to transmit information, it will add "double insurance" to the drone communication.

Inspired by fireflies, recently, the Institute of Optoelectronics and Intelligence of Northwestern Polytechnical University and the China Telecom Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (TeleAI) have made new progress in the research of imitation "firefly" communication drones. Professor Li Xuelong's team has made new progress in the use of optical communication and intelligent information processing technologies by imitating the communication methods of fireflies. The information transmission between UAVs under electromagnetic interference is realized, and the UAVs cluster breaks through more stringent conditions.

In recent years, drone clusters have been widely used in flight shows, express logistics, precision agriculture, urban transportation and other fields. Through perceptual interaction, information transmission and collaborative work, drone clusters can "work together" to achieve the working effect of "1+1>2".

In order to achieve efficient collaborative work, the drones in the cluster need to closely "communicate", but at present, the drone cluster mainly relies on radio communication, electromagnetic characteristics are obvious, easy to be identified by the outside world, but also vulnerable to electromagnetic environment. So, how can the drone cluster cope with the electromagnetic interference of "pulling the plug and breaking the chain"?

In this regard, Li Xuelong's research team, inspired by the way fireflies transmit information through flashing light, studied and proposed an imitation "firefly" communication drone, providing innovative solutions for the development of drone clusters: The light signal is sent out by the lighting device on the UAV, and the light signal is captured by the photoelectric sensor in another UAV for intelligent analysis, so as to realize short-distance information transmission like firefly flickering communication, and complete the cooperative flight between the UAV based on optical link.

Because the transmission of the optical signal is not affected by the electromagnetic environment, it will not produce mutual harmonic mutual interference, and the anti-interference ability is strong. In addition, its transmission power is low, and it generates almost no heat, which is suitable for carrying small drones with limited energy.

In addition, after a lot of research and demonstration process, the research team has "equipped" a number of advanced intelligent algorithms and technologies for the imitation "firefly" communication UAV, fully ensuring the intelligence and stability of the UAV cluster.

"The imitation 'firefly' communication UAV is a new attempt and development under the background that the UAV cluster generally uses radio for communication." The team leader introduced that in the future, the team will continue to conduct in-depth research in the aspects of communication distance, speed, stability and environmental adaptability of the imitation "firefly" communication UAV, and carry out a wide range of applications in the temporary security scenario represented by the "low-altitude economy".
